August: Perseid Meteors

The Best Night for
Shooting Stars in Years

The Perseid meteor shower happens every August, reliably, without fail. What makes this year different is the sky it happens in. On the night of the 12th, the moon all but disappears, and that hasn't lined up this well since 2018. It won't again until 2029.

Most years, watching the Perseids is a bit of a compromise. The shower itself is dependable, it turns up every August like clockwork, but the moon rarely cooperates. A bright moon washes out everything except the biggest, boldest meteors, so a lot of what should be a proper show ends up being a handful of streaks and a lot of patient waiting.

This year the moon simply isn't there. New moon falls on the 12th of August, the same night the shower peaks, so for the first time in years there's nothing in the sky to compete with. No glow, no washing out the faint ones, just genuinely dark skies for the whole night. It's a coincidence of timing that happens roughly once every fifteen years, and the last time it lined up this well was 2018.

So this is the one worth actually making an effort for.

What you're actually looking at

A meteor isn't a star falling, whatever the phrase suggests. Every one you see is a tiny fragment of dust and grit, most no bigger than a grain of sand, burning up somewhere between 50 and 75 miles above your head. It's travelling at around 36 miles a second when it hits the atmosphere, fast enough that the air in front of it heats to thousands of degrees and the whole thing vaporises in a fraction of a second. That flash is what you're seeing. The bigger, brighter ones, the ones that leave a glowing trail hanging in the sky for a second or two afterwards, are just slightly larger fragments doing the same thing more dramatically.

All of it comes from the same source: a comet called 109P/Swift-Tuttle, roughly sixteen miles wide, on a 133-year orbit around the sun. Every August, Earth passes directly through the trail of dust and debris the comet has left scattered along its path, leftovers from every previous close pass. We fly through the densest part of that trail around the 12th and 13th, which is why the shower peaks then and not some other week.

The meteors appear to radiate from a single point in the constellation Perseus, which is where the shower gets its name, but that's really just perspective. The comet debris isn't coming from Perseus at all, the stars there are light years away and have nothing to do with it. It's the same effect as standing in the middle of a motorway and watching snow appear to radiate from a point ahead of you. The meteors can, and do, appear anywhere in the sky.

A shower with a very old name

People have been watching this particular shower for a genuinely long time. Records of it go back to Chinese and Japanese astronomical writings from as early as 36AD, centuries before anyone understood what a comet actually was.

"In medieval Europe the Perseids became known as the Tears of St Lawrence, since the shower falls close to the saint's feast day on the 10th of August, and the streaking meteors were said to be his tears, falling for a martyrdom that, by most accounts, involved a gridiron."

Not the cheeriest bit of folklore attached to a summer night out, but a good reminder that this is one of the oldest, most consistently observed things in the sky. Long before anyone could explain it, people still noticed, and still bothered to watch.

Getting Set Up

How to actually see it

The genuinely good news is that this requires no equipment and very little effort, just the right timing and a bit of patience.

The essentials
What you actually need
  • Nothing optical. No telescope, no binoculars. Both narrow your field of view right down, and meteors can streak across 30 to 60 degrees of sky in under a second, you'd never get one centred in time. Bare eyes see more.
  • Somewhere to lie back. A reclining chair, a blanket on the ground, anything that lets you take in as much sky as possible without craning your neck.
  • Fifteen minutes of patience before anything happens. Your eyes need that long to properly adjust to the dark. Don't check your phone in the meantime, it resets the clock.
  • The darkest spot you can reasonably get to. Streetlights and skyglow genuinely gut the numbers, a rural site can show five to seven times more meteors than a light-polluted one.

When to actually go outside

The peak falls overnight on the 12th into the early hours of the 13th of August, with the best rates generally between midnight and dawn, and 1am to 4am the strongest window of all, once the radiant in Perseus has climbed higher in the sky. The nights either side, the 11th and the 14th, are still worth a look if the peak night gets clouded out, rates on those nights typically run at 50 to 70% of the peak.

Under a properly dark, moonless sky, and this year genuinely qualifies, expect somewhere between 50 and 100 meteors an hour at the best of it. From a suburban garden with some light pollution around, more like 15 to 25. Either way, that's a lot more than most people ever actually stop to watch for.

  • Almost no meteors in an annual shower like this one ever reach the ground. What you're watching burns up completely in the atmosphere, there's essentially nothing left to find afterwards.
  • Comet Swift-Tuttle, the source of all of it, won't swing back through the inner solar system again until 2126. Everything you'll see this August is debris it left behind on a previous pass, decades or centuries ago.
  • The 12th of August 2026 is also a partial solar eclipse day for the UK, over 90% of the sun obscured in places, entirely separate event, that morning, hours before the meteor shower that same night. Never look directly at it without proper certified eclipse glasses, ordinary sunglasses do nothing to protect your eyes.
  • A single Perseid can leave a glowing trail, called a persistent train, that hangs visibly in the sky for several seconds after the meteor itself has gone.
  • Only one confirmed case exists of a meteorite striking a person, an Alabama woman in 1954. It wasn't a Perseid, and it remains about as rare an event as it sounds.

Worth losing some sleep for

This isn't a subtle event you might miss if you're not paying attention. On a properly dark night, it's genuinely one of the best free things the sky does all year, and this particular year has the conditions to prove it. No moon, no equipment needed, nothing to book or buy, just a reason to stay up later than usual and actually look up.

Set an alarm for the early hours if you have to. Give your eyes the fifteen minutes. The rest takes care of itself.
