Every mushroom you'll spot on a walk this month is a fruiting body. That's the polite way of saying it's the bit that pokes up to release spores, not the organism itself. The actual thing, the mycelium, is a mesh of fine white threads spreading through the soil beneath your feet, sometimes for acres, and it's been sitting there quietly all year, waiting for exactly this kind of damp, cooling weather to bother producing something visible.
September and October are when that patience pays off. Warm, wet ground after a summer of growth is what triggers a mushroom to appear, sometimes overnight, which is part of why it always feels like they weren't there yesterday. They weren't, not above ground.
So what you're looking at on a woodland floor this month isn't really the organism. It's the organism finally speaking.
How something this old stays hidden
Fungi aren't plants, and they're genetically closer to animals than to anything green. They don't photosynthesise, so instead of making their own food they break down what's already there: dead wood, leaf litter, fallen fruit, feeding on decay and, in the process, quietly returning nutrients to the soil that everything else in a woodland depends on.
Some mycelium networks are old enough to be genuinely hard to picture. One honey fungus colony in Oregon has been growing continuously for an estimated 2,400 years and covers around 2,385 acres, thought to be the largest single living organism on the planet by area. Most of what you'll walk past this September is nowhere near that scale, but the same basic pattern holds: a network far older and larger than the mushroom sitting on top of it would ever suggest.
Trees rely on this more than most people realise. A huge number of woodland tree species link into mycorrhizal fungi through their roots, trading sugar the tree produces for water and minerals the fungus is better at reaching. It's a genuine partnership, not just decay, one of the reasons an established wood feels so different to a young plantation.
Rings that unsettled people for centuries
Fairy rings, the circles of mushrooms that sometimes appear in fields and woodland clearings, have a straightforward explanation now: mycelium spreads outward from a central point at a steady rate, so the fruiting bodies it eventually produces naturally form a ring. But for a very long time nobody knew that, and the explanations people reached for instead were considerably stranger.

Farmers historically avoided disturbing them, and in some regions livestock were kept well clear, on the belief the grass inside a ring was somehow tainted. There's no truth to the timeslip stories, obviously, but the rings themselves are entirely real, and the biology behind them is arguably stranger than the folklore it replaced.
Getting Set UpHow to actually go looking
You don't need any equipment for this, just the right kind of walk and a willingness to look down rather than out at the view for once.
- Go after rain, a day or two later. That's when fruiting bodies push up fastest. A dry September week will show you far less than a damp one.
- Old woodland beats young plantation. Established broadleaf woods, especially with plenty of dead wood left lying, support far more fungal diversity than a managed conifer stand.
- Look at the base of trees, not just open ground. A huge amount of fungal activity happens right at the root collar, easy to miss if you're only scanning the leaf litter.
- Leave them where they are. Picking a fruiting body doesn't harm the mycelium underground, but eating anything without proper identification genuinely can. Some of the UK's most dangerous species, the death cap and destroying angel among them, closely resemble edible ones to an untrained eye, and by the time symptoms show it can be too late to treat. This is a look-don't-forage month unless you're with someone who actually knows what they're doing.
- If you do want to learn identification properly, get a proper source. A phone photo and a guess is not identification. Better still, a guided walk with a local fungi group beats any app or book, since someone experienced can check what's actually in your hand.
What you'll likely find
September and October in the UK typically bring chanterelles, ceps (also called porcini), fly agaric, the classic red-and-white-spotted one everyone can picture, and puffballs, along with dozens of less showy species doing exactly the same quiet decomposition work without ever getting photographed for it.
No equipment needed. Just damp ground, old trees, and fifteen minutes of actually looking down.
Things that don't come up much
- Fungi are more closely related to animals than to plants. Both share a common ancestor that plants split from much earlier.
- Some fungal networks can send chemical signals between trees, warning neighbouring trees of insect attacks through the same underground connections that trade sugar for nutrients.
- The world's biggest known organism by area is a fungus, not a tree or a coral reef, the Oregon honey fungus mentioned above.
- Bioluminescent fungi exist in the UK. Certain species of honey fungus glow faintly in the dark, an effect historically called foxfire, though it's faint enough that you'd need genuinely dark conditions to see it.
- A single fungal fruiting body can release billions of spores in a matter of days, most of which will never land anywhere useful. It's a numbers game, not precision.
Worth the detour off the path
This isn't a dramatic month-long event like a meteor shower or a migration, it's quieter than that, a slow, ongoing thing happening at ground level in every bit of woodland near you, whether anyone's looking or not. September just happens to be when it's easiest to actually notice.
Take the slower route through the woods this month. Look down more than usual. There's a lot going on that never makes it above the leaf litter.
